How We Improve the Patient Experience

Cancer can be overwhelming. Cancer patients wrestle with a broad range of details, including:

• Getting a timely appointment to meet their oncologist
• Staying on treatment schedules, especially for oral therapies
• Understanding billing cycles and their financial responsibilities
• And much more

By addressing these needs on a personal level, we can help patients reduce stress, feel more in control, and have a better care experience.

The US Oncology Network addresses these needs and more for each and every patient. We invest in the latest technologies and use proven process- improvement techniques, such as Lean Six Sigma, to enhance the patient experience. Through these processes, physicians in The Network measure and improve patients’ time to first appointment, communication, and flow throughout the practice during each visit.

The financial aspects of fighting cancer present serious challenges to patients and their families. The US Oncology Network believes that all cancer patients should have access to the care they need without the threat of severe financial hardship. Patients are offered dedicated support to help access reimbursement- assistance programs. Since the program began in 2006 , more than 25,000 patients from across the country received more than $150 million in financial assistance for needed therapies.

EHR and Patient Safety
Electronic health records (EHR) are an important means for effectively managing a patient’s cancer-care continuum, from decision support and documentation through communications and reporting. Drug-management services can help patients and oncology practices stay on top of treatment regimens and drug inventories. Together, these tools help promote patient safety and improve care.

Integrated Cancer Care
The US Oncology Network believes that integrated cancer care delivered in the community setting is the best way to advance cancer care. The Network also believes that all cancer patients should have access to integrated, outpatient care close to home. Physicians in The Network expand patient access to state-of-the-art technologies, world-class research trials, and evidence-based pathways. The Network provides patients with the collective cancer-fighting knowledge of more than 1,000 physicians — all united to advance the quality of cancer care.

Integrated cancer care means that each patient’s cancer- care team operates together, typically under one roof. At an integrated cancer center, patients may receive a variety of vital medical services, including:

• Chemotherapy
• Radiation
• Imaging
• Participation in clinical trials

The US Oncology Network includes 83 integrated cancer centers located across the nation.
