US Oncology Research

Leadership in developing new treatments is a hallmark of our mission to advance cancer care in America. US Oncology Research supports our national network of community-based cancer researchers, a distinguished group that has contributed to some of the most important new developments in cancer treatment.

US Oncology Research has played a role in the development of 39 of the cancer drugs most recently approved by the FDA. As early as 2002, US Oncology Research participated in a clinical trial to study the postoperative use of chemotherapy, now known (and widely used) as adjuvant therapy.

One of the nation’s largest research networks specializing in Phase I-IV oncology clinical trials. As more patients are treated in a community setting, the research conducted by our network physicians becomes even more valuable in bringing new therapies to patients.

Our research is physician-led and physician-driven. Physicians select the trials in which they want to enroll patients, based on the community they serve and the scientific merit of the question to be answered in the clinical trial. Because of the size of our network and the number of oncology experts associated with it, physicians have unparalleled access to industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trials.

Network physicians also have many research leadership opportunities, including becoming a study principal investigator, a site research leader, or a member of a disease committee. Committees include:

  • Breast
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Genitourinary
  • Gynecologic
  • Hematology
  • Lung
Other committees include blood and marrow transplant operations and research and a scientific advisory board.

Translational Oncology Program (TOP) is designed to address the special challenges of Phase I clinical trials, including increased safety concerns and more complex trial designs. TOP is a select group of US Oncology-affiliated physicians who have Phase I study experience, a dedicated staff and facility equipment that meets the program’s criteria.

TOP represents US Oncology’s goal to take a leadership role in advancing new cancer therapies and delivering them to patients as early as possible. TOP also provides an opportunity for network physicians and nurses to work with new agents early in the development process.
